I had trouble finding more cream cheese to supplement the one 8oz. package I had to make a lemon cheesecake for Christmas dinner at a relative’s, for which I needed five packages. The Good Tern had three. The staff told me there is a national paucity of cream cheese and a major producer is paying $25 to customers who forego making cheesecakes…

Santa comes to Vinalhaven

Santa comes to Vinalhaven

In 1952 Santa came to Vinalhaven, to the church, as he did every year, to separate the worthy from the unworthy. We all foundered in those tricky waters where worthy and unworthy were not so distinct. For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” -Romans 14:10 simply was not as scary as actually sitting in the judgment seat, in the lap no less, of one who knew for sure, not only when we were sleeping and when we were awake, but whether we’d been bad or good or worse, for goodness sake. This was, after all, the eighth annual church visitation from Santa in my own young life, and that was eight more times than I had even seen Christ, let alone sat in his lap.

WEEK 90 COVID-19 RANDOM NOTES WHILE SHELTERING IN PLACE

It is hard to believe I’ve been writing these Random Notes now for 90 weeks. The prolonged virus, its power and variants, homegrown conspiracies, fake news about vaccines, transmissions, masks, social distancing, political divides about all of these topics and Americans’ inabilities to come together as families, political bodies and as a nation to protect one another and find the stamina to sustain the courage to outlast Covid and its variants makes me very anxious.

235 years of Camden Heritage Down by the OLD Mill Stream

235 years of Camden Heritage Down by the OLD Mill Stream

By Barbara Dyer

The Megunticook River has been an important part of Camden for hundreds of years. It has made the town successful by historically providing power for many industries as well as providing amazing recreational areas, waterfalls and dams along its 142 foot drop to the sea culminating into a spectacular pair of falls plunging into the ocean right beside Camden Harbor Park. The river and falls are still supporting the town by making Camden an amazing destination as  a unique place to live or visit.

Unfortunately this local treasure may soon be in peril!
