Chris Wolf Show 2014 12 24 with Richard Podolsky, Ornothologist
Richard Podolsky is a Certified Senior Ecologist. Podolsky has over 30 years of experience in assisting land developers and oil, gas, and electric generation companies reduce potentially adverse environmental effects of a wide range of projects and achieve regulatory compliance. He has excellent strategic skills in competing for bids, expediting permits, and avoiding costly environmental litigation and expertise in researching and successfully applying cost-effective, state-of-the-art environmental techniques, materials and software to new development and mitigation projects. He is a strong team leader and communicator with substantial staff and fiscal management skills and is experienced at proactively addressing the environmental concerns of nonprofit organizations and community groups, and troubleshooting with governmental officials to achieve regulatory compliance.
Podolsky is a national authority on the impact of the built environment on wildlife, especially wind power, artificial lighting and big boxes, and skyscrapers. Podolsky provides clients with all aspects of environmental compliance including but not limited to environmental conservation, natural resource assessments, ecological/environmental restoration, site assessment/site investigations (SA/SI), habitat evaluations, resource conservation and recovery, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Endangered Species Act (ESA), particularly Section 7 Consultations pertaining to ESA.
Podolsky has provided permitting support and ornithological expertise to over 70 wind power projects half of which are located offshore, on islands or in the coastal zone. In this capacity he has conducted numerous collision risk modeling studies using Avian Risk of Collision (ARC) Model for which Podolsky was awarded US Patent #7,315,799.

Locals tend to take Mt. Battie for granted and usually only notice it when the star is lit up. But Mt. Battie is visited by thousands of people each year and is a valuable part of what makes us special.
Built in 1920, the Mt. Battie tower has weathered winter storms and summer sun for many years. They have taken their toll.

The Movie “One Simple Question” is the story of a young couple who seeking adventure, shed the comforts of land, and begin a life at sea aboard a small sailboat.
Their goal is simple—sail north until they find an iceberg. But they’ll need to sail over 1600 miles before the first sign of ice. The journey takes them from the suburbs of New York to the scenic grandeur of Newfoundland and ultimately to a little known place called Iceberg Alley.
What they didn’t anticipate was that they would find a massive piece of the Petermann Ice Island, the record breaking iceberg that drew the attention of climate scientists worldwide.
Teresa Carey, one of the creators of this movie, was our guest on Monday, April 6 with lots of stories to tell about that trip.

Hurricane Island, in Penobscot Bay off Vinalhaven, has undergone various incarnations: first, as a granite quarrying boomtown, second, as an offshore Outward Bound base, and now third, as a Center for Science, Leadership, and Marine Research.
The show is about Hurricane Island, its history and also about a new Bird Banding workshop taught by world-class instructors from The Institute for Bird Populations.
